On May 14, 2015, the first positive test result for Zika virus was detected by The Evandro Chagas Institute and was accredited to a 52-year-old man on May 22, 2015 in São Paulo, Brazil. (Pan American Health Organization & World Health Organization, 2016). In December 2015, there was an estimated 440,000-1,300,000 cases of Zika virus suspected in Brazil alone (Hennessey et al., 2016). By the end of 2016, the virus had spread to over thirty countries and territories across the world but was most prevalent in the Americas. Included in the places involved in the outbreak was the United States and its territories. The first case of Zika virus in the United states was detected on December 30, 2015 in Puerto Rico and was linked to travel outside of the United States (Pan American Health Organization & World Health Organization, 2016). By the end of 2016, a total of 41,572 cases were reported in the United States (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2017).
