SDOH_Paper_docx Social Determinants of Health Western Governors University Social determinants of health (SDOH) are the variables that influence an individuals health based on the environment around them. The SDOH are divided into five key areas: health and healthcare, economic stability, education, social and community context, and neighborhood and build environments. As a nurse, it is important to assess the SDOH as they contribute to the overall health of the individual and the community. In the scenario for this paper, the virtual patient, Carolyn Cross, is an overweight 40-year-old Hispanic American female who presented to her primary care physician for a well woman evaluation. Although she has no acute medical complaints, she is concerned regarding her risk for development of breast cancer due to family history of breast cancer. During her appointment, each of the SDOH were assessed in order to provide a plan of care that is specific to Mrs. Cross. Interview Techniques According to Bickley (2017) it is imperative that communication between the clinician and patient be high quality as it has “been shown to improve patient outcomes, decrease symptoms, improve functional status, reduce litigation, and decrease errors†(p. 65).
