The wars began in 1095. The Byzantium was losing considerable territory to the Seljuk Turks and hence their emperor Alexius asked for help from Pope Urban II to prevent the growth and expansion of the Muslim states, to repossess territories that were previously Christian and to retrieve back the Holy land (Murray, 2017). The Roman Catholic Church used various methods to promote the Crusades. These included rallying together Christians from Europe to help in the fight against Muslim expansion and forming alliances with different leaders to ensure the success of the Crusades. Pope Urban also used several manipulation tactics to garner support. He greatly exaggerated tales of Anti-Christian acts committed by the Muslims. The pope also promised absolution to all who died in during the crusade in service of Christ. When it comes to the Umayyad dynasty, they used many tactics to consolidate their power. Before they came to power, there was no solidified political structure. In order to maintain power in such a large empire, the Umayyad implemented more sophisticated structures with which to govern.
