Importance of Employee Expectations The importance of setting expectations with employees for managers is to align an employees performance to that of the organization. Setting clear expectations helps to establish the scope of what the employee is authorized to perform on the organizations behalf. This goes beyond merely presenting the job description for the employee to read, but the manager has the opportunity set and discuss the limits of these authorizations helping the employee not to exceed them. Setting clear expectations also aligns the individual with the organizational goals, or in other words, sets how the employee fits into the big picture of the organization. By setting clear expectations the manager eliminates misunderstanding which in turn increases workplace harmony, reduces conflict or surprises, and gives the manager a way to hold employees accountable to those expectations. Employees who have a higher understanding of their position, responsibilities and role within the organization leads to greater satisfaction and retention. Greater retention is of benefit to the manager because it attracts a greater pool of talent. For employees, being aligned to the organizations expectations and standards gives them precise details on what is required to be done and how to do it. An employee should not have to guess what is expected of them. Otherwise there is likely to be a great deal of frustration for the employee
