JPT2 .docx Instructional Unit of High School Public Speaking \ Assessment Code: JPT2 Instructional Unit of High School Public Speaking Instructional Problem Summary Needs Analysis Findings A needs analysis was conducted on the students and was found to show a need within the instruction of public speaking and presentation skills. Three different instruments were used as a comparative tool. These instruments were a pretest, a student survey, and previous term grades. The pretest was given to the student initially without any instruction or guidance and graded by a different teacher to avoid bias, as I have taught these students before and know what they are capable of. The survey was given to the students after the presentation. The students scored themselves on how well they believe they possessed public speaking skills, these same skills were the basis of the grading rubric of the pretest. These results were then compared to the students most previous term grades from their primary schools. The overall findings pointed to low learner presentation scores, a bias when students judged themselves on their own skills, and that there is a positive correlation between writing and literature grades to fluency and the structure of presentations. Goal of Instruction The goal is to have all students in the 9th-12th grade communication class score 4 (above average) or 5 (excellent) in all categories of skills (fluency, poise and appearance, structure and grammar, and delivery).
