Global Clinical Trials.docx Global Clinical Trials Industry In order for a new drug or medication to be developed and eventually introduced into the marketplace, it is necessary that the drugs go through a series of clinical trials to be tested for safety, side effects, efficacy, and more. The drugs will often be tested in the lab and on animals first before the clinical trials begin on humans. Throughout generations this clinical trials industry has become quite immense, reaching expenditures of over $18 billion in 2007 in the U.S. alone. Due to the size of this industry, there is an increasing need for large samples of individuals to test these new drugs, thus resulting in these trials becoming globalized. Globalization has become an increasingly prevalent trend in society, especially in pharmaceutical companies, as many companies have worked it into their business models. However, this industry has very lenient regulations in terms of safety and also is in need of lowering their expenditures, and therefore many companies conduct these trials in low and middle income countries in Asia, Latin America and Eastern Europe (Clarke, 2016). This trend of globalized clinical trials exemplifies the exploitation of economically disadvantaged populations in order to benefit patients in developed countries.
