Unit 3 Discussion 2: Learning Theories

Consider the theories of learning you've been studying in this unit. How might we apply those principles to improve our everyday lives, or even the society as a whole? Choose one of the following questions as the basis for your initial post.

  1. Imagine a situation in which you have to teach a skill or concept to a person or animal. Describe the teaching process in reflection of a theory in learning (operant conditioning, classical conditioning, observational learning, etc.). What techniques from these learning theories might you use to most effectively train someone to master a new skill or behavior?
  2. Is punishment ever a useful training technique? What are the arguments against using punishment? How might punishment be used effectively without harming the individual?
  3. Based on what you read about aggression arising from violence in videos, do you think violent behaviors should be banned from entertainment media? What other examples can you think of where exposure to behavior in media might affect the behavior of those watching?

As you respond, refer to the specific learning theories on which you are basing your answer. It is not required to use sources, but if you do refer to research, you should cite it in your post.

He didn’t know how to sit thus we did lots of therapy and reinforcement at home all day everyday. We would teach him how to sit from laying and back to laying from sitting. At the end of sitting we would turn on the iPad with his favorite YouTube video which he would get really excited for Physical punishment usually doesn't work for several reasons. First, it makes the child hate himself and others. Physical punishment makes the child think that there must be something awfully wrong with him to be treated so badly. If children think they are "bad," then they will act "bad." A vicious cycle is formed. The child who has been treated harshly has no reason to be good. Or he may be good just to keep from being punished and not learn to be good because he thinks it is the right thing to do. Children who have been spanked feel that they have paid for their misbehavior and are free to misbehave again. In other words, spanking frees the child from feelings of remorse which are needed to prevent future misbehavior. Parents who use physical punishment are setting an example of using violence to settle problems or solve conflicts, Ch...
