An organ system that facilitates blood circulation throughout the body. Sometimes called the blood-vascular, circulatory, or cardiac system. œIt consists of the heart, which is a muscular pumping device, and a closed system of vessels called arteries, veins, and capillaries. The cardiovascular system is responsible for the delivery of oxygen, nutrients, hormones, and other important substances to cells and organs throughout the body. It also helps maintain body temperature, among other things, and plays a very important role in helping the body meet the demands of activity, stress, and exercise. There are twoblood circulatory systems in the human body. The systemic circulation system provides organs, tissues, and cells with blood so that they get the vital substances they need. The pulmonary circulation system is where oxygen enters the blood and carbon dioxide is released from the blood. It starts when the heart relaxes between two heartbeats. Blood flows from the left and right atrium, into the left and right ventricles respecfully, before being pumped into the large arteries. The left ventricle pumps oxygen-rich blood into the aorta.
