ASSIGNMENT 3 ISSC451.docx ISSC451 Assignment 3 Cybercrime ISSC451 For this weeks assignment I found two instances for review in regards to cyber espionage. The first of which is extremely recent, and it more pertains to President Donald Trump suggesting that China was behind more recent cyber espionage campaign against the United State. And the other is about a former counterintelligence specialist that was charged with espionage on behalf of Iran. On Dec. 21, 2020, the associated press released an article from Beijing stating that the Chinese government was criticizing President Trump for suggesting that Chinese hackers were behind a cyber espionage campaign targeting the United States. In the article President Trump is loosely quoted in saying it may have been China as opposed to Russia, even after the Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and other U.S. government officials asserted the attempts were coming from the Kremlin. The article continues with the Chinese ministry spokesperson condemning the U.S. with “mud-slinging†and spreading misinformation. What is particularly interesting about this article though is that later is states that the U.S. government charged two Chinese citizens, this past July, with cyber spying since 2009. Indicating that the individuals charged were trying to steal information about coronavirus vaccines, weapons, and human rights activists (AP 2020).
