It blocks the absorption of the neurotransmitter serotonin in the brain and from it returning remaining serotonin to presynaptic cells (Woo & Robinson, 2016). This helps the regulate the amount of serotonin that each brain cell can transmit to each other (“Fluoxetine: MedlinePlus Drug Information,†2019) by blocking the reuptake of serotonin. The active metabolite is norfluoxetine, this is produced when CYP 450 enzymes act on it and its important to remember that many of the drug-to drug interactions can occur because of the metabolism at the CYP2D6 isoenzyme. Prozac is an antidepressant that is used to treat depression, in hopes to produce a more stable mood for someone. It is used to treat more than depression, you will see it used for obsessive-compulsive disorder, and panic disorder, and bulimia. (Sohel, Shutter, & Molla, 2019). More recently there have been some off labeling uses for Prozac (Fluoxetine) that include social anxiety disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder in adults, borderline personality disorder, chronic headaches (Woo & Robinson, 2016). Further research will need to be done to support the continued use of Prozac for these disorders.
