Pediatric final

1.       Hemolytic- uremic syndrome: often typically preceded by diarrhea illness that includes hemorrhagic colitis

·         S/s: watery diarrhea accompanied by cramping and sometimes vomiting

·         Diarrhea becomes bloody and eventually improve

·         Lab test reveal: low platelet and leukocytosis

2.      Rubella:

·         Caused by rubella virus

·         Transmission: direct or indirect

·         Incubation: 12-23 days

·         Communicable: 7 days before to 7 days after onset of rash

·         Droplet precaution, private room or cohorting children with the same disease, if not then separate of at least 3 feet away between other children

·         S/S: Low grade fever, malaise, upper respiratory symptoms, Rash is usually a first sign, maculopapular begin on face and spread head to foot.

·         Risk with pregnancy: lead to Congenital defect, check hearing after birth,

3.      Infant

Erickson: trust vs mistrust (birth-1year)

Care provider should respond to basic needs by feeding, changing, touching, holding and talking to infant. Prompt response can create a sense of trust

Piaget: sensorimotor (birth- 2years)

Infant uses senses and motor skills to learn about the world

Toddler

Erickson: autonomy vs shame and doubt (1-3 years)

Achieve autonomy and self-control, separation anxiety takes place, withstands delayed gratification, negativism “no no

Piaget: sensorimotor- tertiary circular reactions

Increased object permanence, delayed imitation, has sense of ownership (my, mine), give them few choices

Preschool age

Erickson: initiative vs guilt (3-5 years)
