Question 21  (TCOs 10 and 11) Think about the concept of midlife crisis. Consider what your text says, as well as your own experience in observing people around you. Do you think that midlife crisis is a reality for most people, just some, or is it total fiction?

Your Answer:

In my opinion I believe that everyone goes through some form of a midlife crisis in their lifetime. According to Levinson, everyone must go through a midlife crisis to confront their life and accept their fate. Whether this be health related, job related, of personal life related. I wouldn’t necessarily call it a crisis from my view, I think it is more of realization of the events that have occurred in someone's life, and what kind of path they wish for themselves in the future. Studies have been done to show what can trigger a midlife crisis and I agree that job loss, or loss of life in a family is something that could trigger these changes for anyone. I know a friend who lost her father recently and before that she was not as focused and wasn’t sure what she wanted, but the loss of her father turned her life around and now she is on a great path to success. She is in her early 20's, so I wouldn’t call this a midlife crisis, but I would say that this event, as tragic as it was, had a positive effect on her life. In my opinion I don’t think that age has to be a factor. You can have a midlife crisis at 28 or 58, either way you are accepting that you want change in some part of your life. Per our text, most scientists use a life events approach to put into perspective how these adults respond to normal and non-normal events and activities. Can we really decide what is normal and non-normal for someone? What be normal for one middle-aged person might not be normal for another. In the end, I don’t think we can really decide if a midlife crisis is a bad thing for someone. As long as that person is happy and healthy, then their life choices should be supported. Maybe we reach a point in our lives where we plateau and we need change in order to survive.

Boyd, Denise, Helen Bee. Lifespan Development, 7th Edition. Pearson Learning Solutions, 03/2014. VitalBook file.

See Chapter 16, page 416. The stereotypical response from students when asked to describe a midlife crisis is that of the middle-aged man getting divorced, buying a fancy red sports car, and dating younger women. When asked, I've found that very few students really know anyone who has done this. The book presents the statistic that only 25% of midlifers report having gone through a midlife crisis. The alternative approach is the life events approach, which considers that crises occur any time there is a major life change. This is true of any age and is not specific to midlife. Of course, the answers from students will vary. It's interesting to compare cultural differences regarding this concept.
