Nursing Theory Perspective
The nursing practice is built on various theories, all of which present the profession from different perspectives. As such, the specific nursing theories serve as the guiding framework for the overall nursing practice. Moreover, the theories present related concepts which serve as an action proposal to guide the practice of nursing. It is therefore imperative to note that all actions in the practice of nursing are guided and directed by a certain theory or a combination of several. The nursing theories are, on the other hand, built on concepts, definitions, models, propositions, and assumptions, which offer the operating framework for the practice (Im & Ju Chang, 2012). The nursing theories are critical for the prediction and explanation of the nursing phenomenon, generation of further nursing knowledge, and the maintenance of the nursing profession boundaries. An example of the nursing theories is the Adaptation model which describes adaptation as the iterative process through which a living matter to others as well as the environmental conditions (Current Nursing, 2012). Sister Callista Roy developed the theoretical framework in 1976.
The conceptual framework triggered the development of the theory by Sr. Roy she developed while at the University of California after a challenge by Dorothy Johnson. Moreover, Roy’s adaptation model is credited to Harry Helson’s adaptation model as well as various definitions by Rapoport and Lazarus. The theoretical model by Roy views the person as a holistic adaptive system characterized by the constant interaction with both the internal and external environments. Furthermore, the theory argues that the primary role of the human system is the continuous maintenance of integrity in the face of different internal and external stimuli.
