Discussion Board Week 6 Discussion Board Week 6 During the great depression, Franklin D. Roosevelt (32nd President of the United States), implemented a Federal Emergency Relief Act called, œNew Deal. It was created to, œput a few dollars into the pockets of hungry workers (Odlum).With unemployment close to 25%, many people were struggling and could not afford to feed their families. This deal was made to create jobs to help cut the unemployment rate down, but originally was not to include artists as most people in those times did not see art as an employable position. However, Harry Hopkins (supervisor of the Federal Emergency Relief Administration and the Works Progress Administration), convinced President Roosevelt to include artists in this deal. One of the paintings that made waves during this time was œEmployment of Negroes in Agriculture. This painting was created in 1934 by Earle Richardson (NY City, NY) as an oil on canvas work with dimensions of 48 x 32 1/8 in, and is currently located within the Smithsonian American Art Museum on the 1st floor of the South Wing. This piece of art is part of a theme surrounding racial injustices, racial violence, and segregation. With Jim Crow laws, lynching™s, and many other racial issues, works of arts touching on these subjects were grouped into a main theme called, œThe Great Migration.
