Nursing Theory Jean Watson's Philosophy and Science of Care is the nursing theory that I have chosen that has shaped my beliefs and goals as well as fits into my educational practice. Jean Watson thought the healthcare approach was holistic. Her model of nursing claimed that "Nursing is about care for the sick, promoting health, preventing disease, restoring health, promoting health, and the professional, personal, scientific, esthetic and ethical relationships we have with our patients as nurses. She also appreciated the patient as a human being who needs to be understood, assisted, nurtured, cherished, and cared for, which her humanist-altruistic value system supports" (Petiprin, 2016.). Jean Watson developed the self-sensitivity and responsiveness to others she believed helped grow the feelings of the nurse, helping them to be more genuine, sincere, and attentive to the patient and their needs. This facilitated the promotion and growth of the help-trust relationship between the nurse and the patient, allowing the patients to feel freer or more likely to open up to the nurses. The philosophy of Jean Watson also refers to the hierarchy of needs, such as those of Maslow's. The philosophy of Jean Watson is the basis for taking care of the patient by treating them as an person by listening to them, by allowing their input into their treatment and by respecting them and their decisions.
