Description of Chosen Outbreak  Measles is an infectious viral disease with the primary symptoms being rash and fever. Other symptoms can include cough, diarrhea, photophobia and congestion (“2005 – Measles”, n.d.).   The outbreak discussed in this paper occurred in Indiana in 2005. The initial case occurred in a young, unvaccinated girl who travelled to Romania and unknowingly brought this disease into her community upon her return. The onset of illness for the index patient occurred on May 16, 2005 and the last onset of illness was on July 8, 2005. A total of 34 people were infected, with three cases resulting in hospitalization but no deaths, (Parker, et al., 2006).  A1. Epidemiological Determinants    Measles lives in the nose and throat mucus of infected persons and is transmitted via large respiratory droplets.  The disease spreads when a person coughs or sneezes and can remain alive in the air for up to two hours. Transmission of the infection occurs when someone breathes the contaminated air or touches a contaminated surface and measles is so contagious that approximately 90% of people in close contact with an infected person will become infected.
