Introduction to Curriculum Theory Task 1 Introduction to Curriculum Theory As an educator, it is vital to the success of my classroom that I have a solid understanding of curriculum theories. It is important to understand that social reconstruction, social efficiency, scholar academic, and learner-centered ideologies all have a place in education. However, while all of these ideologies do have a place in my instructional setting, I do believe there are some that are more appropriate than others. The first curriculum ideology is social reconstruction. Educators that promote this ideology believe that education is a powerful tool that can be used to solve the issues within our society. One of the key elements is that our society is not healthy and has problems that need to be addressed and fixed. Schiro (2008) explains that other key elements are that educators that promote this ideology believe that our society can be better than it currently is, and that education is a medium for creating a better society. Schiro (2008) emphasizes that in order to understand social reconstruction, it is necessary to understand the problems that are plaguing our society such as: racism, conflict (war), poverty, unemployment, and over population. Furthermore, this ideology operates under the assumption that if used properly, education can teach individuals how to view the problems that are plaguing our society, and act in a manner that can actually lead to the creation of a new society.
