Support Group Selection Instructions
This assignment will prepare you for the Final Paper due in Module/Week 7. Therefore, you must choose a 12-step group meeting to attend and then answer the questions on the Support Group Selection Form.
It is important to find out if the group you plan to attend is either open or closed to the general public. This information can be obtained by locating a meeting schedule online. Please note, students are only to attend open meetings. Be aware that if you try to attend a closed group, you may be asked to leave. You will be required to download, print, and bring the Support Group Attendance Form to be signed by the chairperson at each of the 3 meetings. This form will be submitted to Blackboard separately from the paper in Module/Week 7.
Once you arrive at the meeting, be sure to locate the leader/facilitator and introduce yourself. Explain why you would like to attend the meeting and ensure he/she will allow you to attend and observe. Listen quietly and respectfully during the meeting. You are there to observe. If you are asked to participate in the discussion, feel free to do so respectfully; however, most of the time, you will only observe the group members.
If you already attend a 12-step group meeting, it is a good idea to find a different type of meeting to attend. For example, if you regularly go to AA meetings try to find an NA meeting to attend.
