Breast Cancer in Women
Breast cancer has gained popularity over time. Supported by current research on the rate of prevalence, experts postulate that one in every eight women born now will be diagnosed with the disease at least once in their lifetime (Mayo Clinic, 2012). Recent studies estimate that about 231,840 new cases of invasive breast cancer and 60,290 new case of non-invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in 2015 (Ueberroth, 2014). Moreover, these statistics further indicate that about 40,290 women will die from the disease. Based on the findings on the case of 39-year old Emily, this paper presents findings on breast cancer – from risk factors through symptoms to diagnosis.
Types of breast cancer
Even though there a broad variation of breast cancer, two broad categories exist – non-invasive breast cancer and invasive breast cancer. Invasive breast cancer can extend to the other parts of the body. Invasive ductal breast cancer is the utmost prevalent form of invasive breast cancer (Harmer, 2011). About 80 percent of all diagnoses for breast cancer attribute to this form of breast cancer (Ueberroth, 2014). On the contrary, the non-invasive type is often found in the ducts of the human breast. Other less popular manifest of breast cancer include inflammatory breast cancer, Paget’s disease of the breast and invasive lobular breast cancer.
Risk factors
Studies implicate age as one of the strongest influence in probabilities of breast cancer (Barth, 2014). That is, the possibilities of breast cancer increase as a woman gets older. However, these studies also show that these possibilities are not equal for all women in a definite age group (Tabar, Tot, & Dean, 2011). Even so, several other factors place women at higher probabilities of the disease.
Firstly, genetic alterations in certain genes such as BCRA1 and others elevate the risk of breast cancer.
