Quarles (2015) excerpt of the “Southern Baptists must learn to ‘Choose our battles wisely’” highlights the results of a belief assessment essentials exam administered by Louisiana College to determine their understanding of the essential doctrines of Christian faith. Their overall score of 67% implies that the students are failing to grasp the doctrines of humanity’s sinful and lost condition, Jesus’ identity as God, the necessity of faith in Jesus for salvation and the Lord’s bodily resurrection. While 90% among them claim to be Christians, only 60% grew up in our Baptist Churches, therefore, the minimal church attendance can be associated with the poor understanding of the doctrines.
From the research question “Is there a relationship between the frequency of church attendance and the level of understanding of basic Christian doctrine?” a null hypothesis (H0) would be “there is no relationship between the frequency of church attendance and the level of understanding of basic Christian doctrine.” The alternative hypothesis (H1) would be “The frequent church attendance enhances the understanding of basic Christian doctrine.”
I intend to collect my surveys in person. This method is more cost efficient and effective considering that I am required to collect surveys from at 12 people as compared to creating online forms and inviting them to participate. One of the challenges that might arise while using this method is an unwillingness to participate in some respondents due to busy schedules and other reasons. By adequate preparation, I hope I’ll convince them and encourage them to respond.
In my opinion, I expect that the results of this study will prove that frequent church attendance enhances the understanding of basic Christian doctrine, supporting the alternative hypothesis. The church services include teachings of the Christian doctrines and applications of the same.
