Some people do not comprehend why or how other people become addicted to alcohol. They may believe that those who drink lack the principles or willpower and that they could stop drinking by simply by wanting to. Addiction is a complex disease and quitting takes more than good intentions and a strong will. When a person who is physically dependent on alcohol stops drinking they go through withdraw symptoms. This happens because the brain and central nervous system have physiologically changed and become dependent on the alcohol. Treatment is the only choice for those who have become addicted.
