Maslow’s had five basic assumptions regarding motivation, they were holistic, complex, people are continuously motivate by at least one need, people everywhere are motivated by the same basic needs and they can be arranged in a hierarchy format.
Maslow believed that motivation is holistic “that whole person, not any single part or function is motivated” (Feist et al. 2013). Essentially he believed that a person cannot be half motivated. For example a person cannot be partially motivated to seek food or shelter. As a whole being, we have the basic need to seek food or shelter, and if these needs are not met, our whole being is affected, not just a part.
Maslow believed secondly that motivation is complex “a person’s behavior may spring from several separate motives” (Feist et al. 2013). For example, love. A person’s desire to find love is not just motivate for sexual gratification. A person may be motivated to find love for intimacy, friendship, being connected to a person and being united with another individual who seek the same purposes and goal in their life.
Third, Maslow believed that people are continuously motivated by one need or another.
