Question 1 The staffing framework recognized in the case study is ethnocentric approach. The headquarters at U.S. make key decisions, such as hiring managing directors. Employees from the home country hold top positions in the subsidiaries. For example, Paul, a U.S. citizen holds a managing director position in Chicago Food and Beverage Company, Vietnam, replacing Mike Shannon who is also from the U.S. Employees from the local areas holds smaller job positions and they feel unsatisfied, leading to reduced motivation, which in turn decreases the performance of the subsidiary in Vietnam. The approach is advantageous in that Question 2 The ethnocentric type of staffing can affect Paul’s ability to get things done. His employment is based on his nationality and his previous relationship with the Chicago Food and Beverage Company, rather than international experience, which he definitely lacks. Considering that, everything is done according to the needs of the local market and Paul does not have much experience internationally, it may take him a longer time than expected, to get the desired level of success. The knowledge and performance gaps, between Paul and the managers appointed from locally seem to be large.
