Snider Studying Crisis Psychology, Liberty University, Lynchburg, VA, 24515 Email: [email protected] When entering this class our objectives according to the syllabus, were to introduce us to the techniques of psychological research, to improve our understanding of how research is done and the methods used to do it, and to give us the aptitude to communicate knowledgeably about the thoughts behind the research procedures. I will be using a case study approach on myself for the following two questions: What have you learned about research at an introductory level? How do you evaluate or critique from a biblical, Christian perspective? By using a case study approach it will give me the ability to give a more depth investigation on a single person (Cozby & Bates, 2012), and in this case I will be the person best suited for the following two questions. Research at an Introductory Level What have you learned about research at an introductory level? “Scientific research on behavior has four general goals: (1) to describe behavior, (2) to predict behavior, (3) to determine the causes of behavior, and (4) to understand or explain behavior” (Cozby & Bates, 2012, pp. 8). When talking about description of behavior it begins with careful observations because the first goal of science is to define behavior (Cozby & Bates, 2012). Predication of behavior is another goal of science. After it has been examined with some consistency it becomes possible to make predictions (Cozby & Bates, 2012). The third goal of science is to determine the reasons behind behavior. Even though one may precisely calculate ones occurrence for the behavior, we may not know exactly what’s behind the cause of ones actions. (Cozby & Bates, 2012). The last goal of science is to clarify the actions that have taken place. The scientist then pursues to comprehend why the behavior takes place (Cozby & Bates, 2012). Basic and Applied Research “Basic research tries to answer fundamental questions about the nature of behavior” (Cozby & Bates, 2012, pp. 11). Studies are frequently intended to concentrate on theoretical issues regarding phenomena such as cognition, emotion, motivation, learning, neuropsychology, personality development and social behavior (Cozy & Bates, 2012). “Applied research is conducted to address issues in which there are practical problems and potential solutions” (Cozby & Bates, 2012, pp. 12).
