C489Task3 COUNTRY TO COMPARE The United States compared to C489Task3 COUNTRY TO COMPARE: The United States compared to Switzerland ACCESS In Switzerland, citizens are required to have basic health and accident insurance. The insurance premiums are not funded by taxes or employers like they are in the U.S. but instead are paid by the insured. Each person must be individually insured and once a person turns 18 years old, they are required to pay their own premiums. Babies are covered as soon as they are born, but once they are 3 months old, they must also have their own coverage (Expatica Communications, 2017). This is different in the U.S. where children are typically on the same insurance plan as their parents and siblings. In Switzerland not only do citizens have to pay for their medical insurance premiums, but there are also out of pocket costs as well. The Swiss pay roughly 10% of their annual salaries for health insurance premiums. Basic coverage pays for emergency treatment, vaccinations, outpatient treatment, maternity care, and childbirth. The care is provided in hospitals or polyclinics which are outpatient medical clinics. In contrast, in the U.S. a citizens employer pays a large portion of the insurance premium and the insured contributes as well. The insurance policies vary greatly in the U.S. and often have high deductibles that must be met prior to insurance paying any claims. My own insurance deductible this year was $4,500 for our family of four, however, next year will go up to $6000. In Switzerland, there is a
