The Safety of Urban Air Mobility
Abstract
Urban air mobility entails the movement of people, materials, and supplies by way of an aircraft such as helicopter between and within cities and other urban areas with aircraft landing and takeoff network system and infrastructure. This paper describes safety elements with a lot of emphasis on process features and critical economic considerations related to the costs and efficiency, which include, economic factors, environmental concerns such as the noise contributions, regulations, technology, established infrastructure and the safety management systems (SMS) put in place into the industry. SMS systems highlighted are risk management, safety policy, assurance, promotion and the role of the system. The issue of congestion in towns has been a major problem across the globe, and many technological institutions are putting into place various innovations to curb the problem. The paper also cites challenges, technology in place in comparison with the conventional aircraft and commercial plane and private jets. Further, it lays a considerable stress and emphasis on how the issues in place are connected to the safety matters as well as their relevance in the operation, development, and the distribution of aircraft services among the cities in the world. The level of safety is also compared to the records available for the conventional aircraft and the industry trends. In conclusion, the industry regulations and safety matters are also comprehensively discussed.
The Safety of Urban Air Mobility
Urban air mobility entails the movement of people, materials, and supplies by way of an aircraft such as helicopter between and within cities and other urban areas with aircraft landing and takeoff network system and infrastructure. More emphasis is put on how the technological issues in place are associated with the safety matters and all their relevance in the development actions and the distribution of aircraft services among the cities in the world. Accidents have claimed many lives in major world towns. For this reason, it is imperative to ensure the safety of any technological advancement as far as transport between and within cities is concerned. Safety levels and standards are also objectively assessed with the available information regarding the conventional aircraft and the industry trends.
Safety Management System (SMS)
Safety management system denotes a proactive and integrated approach to all matters of air mobility and safety. It is integrated into many urban air mobility systems and defines the structure and scope of safety management networks, available resources, company staff accountability, authorities and responsibilities, and how major decisions are taken and managed within the system. The urban air mobility safety management systems (SMS) are developed and implemented by FAA and FAR in cooperation with the federal management policies (Chen & Chen, 2014). The safety management systems consist of four functional components; safety policy, safety risk management, assurance, and promotion.
Safety Policy
The policy outlines the methods and processes for achieving the desired security outcomes. It declares the principles of communicating the aviation positive safety culture and the responsible manager’s explicit direction. As a norm, the aviation technology investors and developers jointly operate with personnel in charge of safety-critical areas. In essence, the critical areas for aviation safety policies include the management commitment and responsibility, safety accountabilities, appointment of qualified and experienced safety personnel, coordination of emergency response planning and SMS documentation. The accountability is the obligation to answer for any actions. The Urban air mobility companies always operate under added imperative to minimize all risk factors in the aviation industry. It forms part of safety responsibility, which is the obligation to perform a designated task to its completion. There is continually evolving FAR and FAA policies and laws, which increase the urban air mobility safety levels and therefore very important for every organization (Chen & Chen, 2014). The Safety process is predominantly used in the aviation industry to monitor control and implement changes. Any potentially adverse outcomes are assessed and established through safety policies.
Safety Risk Management
The urban air mobility safety risk management is responsible for the hazard identification processes, risk assessment, and mitigation processes and internal safety investigation. After the first three steps of risk management techniques, the associated risk are viewed regarding severity and likelihood, and consequently, mitigation measures are implemented to reduce the risk level to as low as possible.
Assurance
Urban air mobility safety and assurance employs the aviation safety performance of the industry players and allows for continuous improvement. It has three aspects: safety performance measurement and review such as safety reporting studies trend analysis and safety investigations. Secondly, the management of change, which identifies the external and internal variation that may affect process and services. Finally is the continuous improvement of the safety system.
Promotion
Safety promotion can be achieved through training and education and safety communication at all organizational levels. Safety and Health programs should be adopted at every level of the organization.
Role of Safety Management System in Urban Air Mobility
Urban air mobility safety management systems (SMS) help in mitigating aircraft accidents and ensure employee health and productivity. SMS instills a safety culture that reduces accidents for workers and improves the bottom line for aviation manager. Moreover, it has the ability to control potentially risky operations and creates a clear and documented approach to safety operations. Safety policy, assurance risk management, and promotion provide a systematic approach to achieving acceptable levels of security within the firm (Chen & Chen, 2014). Further, SMS helps to build a positive safety attitude and reduce operational inefficiencies. It establishes a common language for the industry to develop safety objectives, targets, implements, and monitors the safety risk controls. Lastly, SMS risk management operates within its powers and resources to lay a possible defense from legal action.
Economics
The Urban air mobility service enthusiasts and startups technology companies consider actions which are genuinely geared towards the safety of the flying electric automobiles in the production process. Prototypes are developed, produced, and reexamined to establish any of existing flaw that can disrupt production and distribution of economically efficient and safe urban transport systems. The network systems of access points in place ensure safety area for delivery of smart grid power supply and battery charging points. Furthermore, the distribution process is being implemented to provide safe access to the landing and takeoff points in the urban areas and megacities, parks as well as Vertis tops on top of skyscrapers. The level of utilization of any new technology usually rises after the first successful prototype development followed by test marketing. The c...
