Philippine Colonization by Spanish and American Rulers

The reaction of Filipino towards the colonialism by America was not very different to the way they viewed the Spanish rulers. The country’s leadership, led by Emilio Aguinaldo was strongly opposed to their rule. The two colonial rulers were very cruel and their treatment to the Philippine nationals was inhuman. Despite the efforts to win the hearts of Philippines, the residents remained adamant and this resulted in bloodshed when the people patience was exhausted. This paper will look at the reaction of the people of Filipino to the Spanish and American rulers, how their attitude differed and how similar it was. Spanish colonial rule in Philippine involved impacting religious teachings on the people. The people accepted the Spanish teachings with the hope of uniting the many tribes in the country. The Spanish colonization of Philippines is still evident even today since Philippines is the only country in Asia with catholic followers. The Spanish used religion as a tool to advance its colonization efforts (Hamilton 1). However, country has a high number of Muslims who existed even before the colonialization began. The resistance against Spanish colonialists began in 1872 when there was an uprising in Cavite. The Spanish responded to the revolt by murdering three Philippine priests. This did not drive fear to the Filipinos and were more discontented with the injustices against them. The execution of the three Philippians marked the start of a revolution that continued to the end. The Philippine revolution against the Spanish rulers was aimed at getting fair treatment for all citizens. The continued oppression resulted in many injustices against the masses which the colonialists used as a weapon to scare the rebellion leaders.
