There were at least 4.3 million child maltreatment referral reports in 2018 (American SPCC, 2020). Child abuse alone involved about 7.8 million children. Out of those children, only 3.3 million received help. There are different types of child abuse ranging from child neglect, physical abuse, emotional abuse, sexual abuse, childhood trauma, shaken baby syndrome, domestic violence, and trafficking and exploitation. State laws regarding child maltreatment is set by Federal legislation. They lay the groundwork for setting actions/behaviors that explain child abuse and neglect. The Federal Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CAPTA) defines child abuse and neglect as a failure to protect like a parent or caretaker that should result in death, serious injury, sexual abuse (Child Welfare Information Gateway, 2019). By the laws of the Federal and State, the ones that can be held responsible for child abuse are those of the parents and caretakers of the child, not acquaintances or strangers. There are even some states that classify child abuse if the child witness™s domestic violence. Each state has their own specific laws pertaining to child abuse and neglect. Most missions of any childcare welfare are to promote safety of that of any child(ren).
