IT332_Unit_03.docx(1)  IT332  FROM THE OUTSIDE, IN  Purdue University Global  IT332 Principles of Information Systems Architecture  From the Outside, In  In examining the innerworkings in this discourse I will start with the Hard Drive on the outside and work our way into the very heart of the Central Processing Unit, the CPU, oft called the brains of the computer. Within the hard drive(s) is all the data that is directly within the computer, though that is not to say, in this age of cloud computing, that it is all the data the computer operates with. The hard drive memory comes in two forms, Hard Drive Disk which is electromagnetic with moving parts, including a round disk that spins and holds data in magnetic material on that disk, or SSD, or Solid-State Drive, with no moving parts. SSD technology has been around for some time, mostly in the form of thumb drives, but until recently was to cost prohibitive to be used as a hard drive.  The next in line to look at is the RAM, or Random-Access Memory. This is a smaller unit of memory that provides speed of access. It adds that speed by proximity as well as not having moving parts, though most are different than the SSD in how they operate. One other major difference is the volatility of the RAM. As soon as the power is removed the memory within the RAM is lost. What is in the RAM is determined by the instructions sent to the CPU regarding the software in use. The data that is needful is triaged towards the RAM. The general belief is that an increase
