According to a recent study conducted by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services posted in the journal Health Affairs, expenditures are projected to grow at an average annual rate of 5.5 percent for 2018–27 and represent 19.4 percent of gross domestic product in 2027 (Sisko et al., 2019, para. 1). To put thats into perspective the GDP for the United States in 2018 was $20.89 trillion dollars. The significance of rising healthcare costs is not just the strain it puts on the economy but also the burden it creates for the consumer, and everyday people in the United States are having to make tough choices when it comes to their healthcare because of the risings costs. Research shows that implementing a single-payer healthcare system would help with rising healthcare costs in the United States because it will help stabilize healthcare costs, reduce healthcare waste, and simplify healthcare for the consumer.
