According to a recent study conducted by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services posted in the journal Health Affairs, expenditures are projected to grow at an average annual rate of 5.5 percent for 2018–27 and represent 19.4 percent of gross domestic product in 2027 (Sisko et al., 2019, para. 1). The significance of rising healthcare costs is not just the strain it puts on the economy but also the burden it creates for the consumer, and everyday people in the United States are having to make tough choices when it comes to their healthcare because of the risings costs.
