This staff update will address the  issues involving social media use in the workplace and tips on what not to do.  Brief  Review of  Key Terminology  In 1996, the HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) was enacted; œHIPAA provides federal protections for patient health information and gives patients an array of rights with respect to that information" (DeSimone., 2019, p. 59).  Its goal is to ensure that  patient health information is kept safe and secure, and HIPAA provides regulations that govern the sharing of such information. It has become the standard of care for patient privacy.  PHI or protected health information is any information that can act as an identifier of an individual, such as name, address, phone number, etc. (Moore et al., 2019)  The Privacy Rule under HIPAA focuses on the use and disclosure of health information.  For example, patients provide consent to share their health information. They have a right to  their privacy, and they decide who they want to share the information with. (Savage et al., 2020).  Under HIPAA, the Security Rule
