Theories of Ethics and Contemporary Moral Issues

Overall Task: Write a 3-4 page paper (12 point font, double-spaced, 1 inch margins, normal character spacing) that completes at least 1 of the tasks below.

To be submitted on Canvas, excepting approved illustrations

Students are highly encouraged to see the instructor about a draft before the final paper draft is submitted.

The instructor will read and provide feedback on entire drafts only in person, during office hours. Students should keep in mind that time limitations may prevent this taking place effectively on the last day or two before the assignment is due, when many other students may decide to seek feedback. The instructor will provide feedback on portions of the paper by e-mail. (Please allow for 24 hrs response time.)

Task 1: Illustrations

Create a visual depiction of some aspect of one of our readings.

This could be an artistic rendering of a passage containing rich imagery like Plato’s “Allegory of the Cave,” or his depiction of Aristophanes’ speech in the Symposium.

Or, the visual depiction could be a detailed outline (or flowchart, etc.) of a passage like Aristotle’s Ethics, Bk III, Ch 1, or Bk VIII, ch 1 which are notable for their detailed claims and sub-claims.

Excellent visual depictions will show evidence of a close, detailed reading of the passage, as well as skilled craftsmanship. Artistic renderings are recommended only for excellent artists!

Students who choose this option also have the option of adding written explanation of their visual depiction. Such writing would be expository, and need not be in the format of a standard college essay.

For excellent illustration examples, just ask, or see my office door!

Task 2: Notable Moments

This task involves expository writing. It need not be in the format of a standard college essay.

Describe notable aspects of a selection (or “moment”) from one of our texts.

Length: ½ page minimum per moment

-These moments or aspects of the text may be notable for their poetic, philosophical, or historical quality, though emphasis on philosophical quality is preferred.

-It is important to explain why each moment or aspect is notable to you. The grade for this assignment mostly depends on written evidence that you have put serious, sustained thought into your selections and their relevance to life outside the classroom.

-A moment/textual selection can constitute a phrase, a line, a paragraph, or even a few paragraphs from a text.

-Direct quotations should be limited to just a few lines of the paper. If a direct quote is longer than 3 lines, please reduce font size and line spacing (use “block format”). Paraphrasing is preferred to direct quotes.

Task 3: Philosophy Connections!

This task involves expository writing. It need not be in the format of a standard college essay.

-Provide a well-explained connection between some aspect of your life outside our class (a popular song, an old tradition, a play, a recent work of philosophy, another course, a personal problem, etc.) and the philosophy readings of our course.

-Minimum Length: ½ page per connection

- The result of a good connection is that aspects of the original text come forward in a way that is insightful and substantive, and that we perhaps did not even get to uncover in class.

-For examples of excellent Philosophy Connections, please ask!

Task 4: Argument Elucidation

Concisely outline and explain at least three premises and one conclusion of any argument from our reading.

Students are strongly advised to have their argument selections approved by the instructor before handing in a final draft.

Length: Roughly one page per argument is best (Times or Cambria, 12point font, normal character spacing, 1inch margins, double spaced)

Format for each argument:

A. State the specific range of pages in the text in which the argument occurs, and explain the argument’s context.

B. List and number the premises in one or two lines each. Identify and list the conclusion in one or two lines. For example:

Premise 1: Plato writes x, y, and z on 400b

Premise 2: Plato writes a, b, and c on 400c.

Premise 3: Plato writes p, q, and r on 400d.

Conclusion: Plato has Socrates conclude that ………. is the case on 400e.

C. Analyze the argument by answering at least three of the following questions:

i. What support is offered for each premise, if any?

ii. Is the argument convincing? Why or why not?

iii. Does the author contradict the argument somewhere else in the text? Where? How?

iv. What is the importance of this argument? Or, is it insignificant? Why?

*Please label each part clearly, i.e., A, B, C, i, ii, iii…

Grading Rubric (For all 4 above):

Thoughtfulness and Insight: 50%

This portion of the grade reflects the degree to which the writing is thought out carefully, reflected upon with authenticity, and clearly insightful. The amount of time and effort the student puts into the paper will most likely directly correlate with this portion of the grade.

Effective Use of Texts/Course Readings: 30%

This portion of the grade reflects the degree to which our course readings/texts are used effectively in the paper, meaning that they are mentioned and/or quoted when appropriate, and treated with accuracy. If the student uses class notes or other notes without consulting the reading, this portion of the grade will be affected negatively. Proper citation of sources also affects this portion of the grade.

Style: 20%

This portion of the grade reflects the degree to which the student’s writing is clear, concise, free or redundancy, and free of grammatical errors. Proper citation of sources also affects this part of the paper grade.
