The legal drinking age in America has been the age of 21 since congress passed the National Minimum Drinking Age Act in 1984. My personal stance is for lowering the legal drinking mostly because I feel if, at the age of 18, you are old enough to serve in the United States Military and potentially die for your country then you should be old enough to consume alcohol. During the essay I am going to explore three premises that goes against my position in an effort to improve my critical thinking skills and application. I will start with the argument that lowering the MLDA (Minimum Legal Drinking Age) would be medically irresponsible. Next, I will explore the argument of increasing the drinking age of initiation because of the dangers posed by drinking. Finally, I will discuss why we should not follow European drinking age limits in the United States. Many of the arguments for lowering the minimum age of drinking can be very convincing; however, how can you argue against facts backed by medical data?
I chose this premise because I felt it was important to dive in to medical reasoning to help educate myself on why lowering the age of consumption could have long term effects on the mind. According to a study performed by Scott Swartzwelder, Ph.D. and Susan Hiller, Ph.D., the adolescent brain is said to be “uniquely sensitive to alcohol’s effects because major changes in the brain structure and function occur during this developmental period.”1 The studies say that adolescents are more sensitive to alcohol’s memory-impairing effects than adults. ...
