INTERPRETIVE QUESTION 1 1:5 Does “day” mean a 24-hour period or ages? When considering the meaning of the word “day” as it is presented here in Genesis it must be understood this word can be used in five basic variations. 1) a period of light, 2) a period of 24 hours, 3) a general vague timeframe, 4) a point of time, or 5) a year. In order to fully capture the meaning of a word it must be taken in context with the literature in which it exists. Considering that the word “day”, as it exists outside of Genesis 1 always refers to a 24 hour period of time it is logical to conclude that the same word would hold the same meaning inside the context of Genesis 1. Staumbaugh, James. The Meaning of “Day” in Genesis. The Institute For Creation Research. http://www.icr.org/article/meaning-day-genesis/. Cited 02/17/2016 Mr. Staumbaugh was defending the literal interpretation of the word “day”. In the English and Hebrew languages figurative uses of speech are used continually. The word for “day” found in Genesis 1 is no different. The three basic meanings in Hebrew for “day” are; daylight as opposed to night, a 24 hour period, and a period of time of unspecified length. By using the figurative approach in Genesis can cause some confusion for the lay reader because this is not common use of the word “day”. It is used in this manner however, when one refers to remembering a time back in the “day”, or back in the “day” of Ronald Reagan the country operated differently. It may be easier to accept the literal interpretation out of sheer familiarity, but after closer examination the fact that the figutative use of the Hebrew word was applied here to complete the thought of the author. Phillips, Perry G. Dr. ARE THE DAYS OF GENESIS LONGER THAN 24 HOURS? THE BIBLE SAYS, "YES!". https://faculty.gordon.edu/hu/bi/ted_hildebrandt/OTeSources/01-Genesis/Text/Articles-Books/Phillips-DaysofGenesis-IBRI.pdf. 1991. Cited 02/17/2016. Dr. Phillips was defending the figurative interpretation of the word “day”. In considering the meaning of creation "days”, the key arguments in favor of a figurative, non-literal meaning of the creation "days” have been found unsubstantiated on the basis of genre investigation, literary considerations, grammatical study, syntactical usages, and semantic connections. The cumulative evidence, based on comparative, literary, linguistic and other considerations, converges on every level, leading to the singular conclusion that the designation yom, "day," in Genesis 1 means consistently a literal 24-hour day. The author of Genesis 1 could not have produced more comprehensive and all-inclusive ways to express the idea of a literal "day" than the ones that were chosen. There is a complete lack of indicators from preposi...
