Topic: After reading the assigned information, answer the question, "What is the 'desire of woman?'” (Genesis 3:16) Genesis 3:16 (NIV) 16 To the woman he said, “I will make your pains in childbearing very severe; with painful labor you will give birth to children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.” In the Garden of Eden things were perfect, Adam and Eve were in perfect harmony with God. Eve was tempted by Satan to eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Eve was deceived into disobeying God by taking a bite of an apple. Then she turned and gave it to her husband, he took a bite as well. God asked “Adam who gave him this permission? He blamed Evil, and Evil replied it was the serpent’s fault. God cursed her with child bearing and a desire for her husband. A woman’s desire was to have a strong natural attraction toward her husband. “Suq connotes a violently desire so strong for something that one would run after; or crave it. Some commentators have felt that this is not so much a curse as a compensation for the sorrow of child birth: It seems reasonable to conclude that this ‘desire’ was given to alleviate sorrows of womanhood and to bind the hearts of husband and wife closely together.” (Davis 1998, 94) The two should become one flesh. The wife would have a sexual desire for her husband. Sin brought disorder and chaos to society. God gave man rule of woman to love, protect, and cover her in providing spiritual and natural protection. Man is her veil and head covering which is a sign of submission. (Gen. 3:16). “Joshua Harris author and speaker, reaffirms this teaching in his book “Boy Meets Girl,” “God assigned the married woman the responsibility of being a helpmate to her husband (Genesis 2:18-20). A helpmate (or helper) is a position of great responsibility and gentle strength. It is not a position of weakness as often associated with the command of submission (Ephesian 5)<="" span="">. A godly helpmate entrusts herself to God, follows her husband’s lead, and uses her gifts and abilities to effectively support and aid her husband.” (Stelzer 2007) The “desire of woman” in Genesis 3:16 can mean two different things both based on the context of the passage. God has confronted both Adam and Eve in their sin, and God is pronouncing His judgment on Ev...
